About Me
Alan MacCharles

Alan is a strategist with almost 30 years of experience. Prior to relocating to Shanghai in 2006, he lived and worked in London and Toronto. His expertise in mergers and acquisitions is highlighted by his success in expanding a China-based operation from an initial hire of one to a team of over 100 professionals.
In his capacity as an M&A advisor, Alan focused on team building, forming joint ventures, market entry strategy, and business modeling. Towards the end of his tenure at Deloitte he was concentrating on joint venture formation and supporting clients with pre-emptive, ‘no-regret’ moves to protect from the changing global business landscape. Over the course of the pandemic, his research interests shifted from general market to a specific focus on joint ventures, responses to global business environment turbulence and the roles of advisors.
Since November 2024, Alan leads the Executive Education and Lifelong Learning programs at Duke Kunshan University, concentrating on growth and educational innovation. Concurrently, he engages in independent consulting specializing in joint venture strategies and organizational resilience.
Alan holds a Doctor of Business Administration from Cranfield University and an MBA from London Business School.
